Cash Splash Controversy: Nigerian Makeup Artist Jailed for "Spraying" Naira at Wedding
In a striking clash between cultural celebration and financial law, Nigerian make-up artist Abdullahi Musa Huseini, widely known as "Amuscap" on social media, was sentenced to six months in jail for "spraying" cash at his wedding last December. The high court in Kano handed down the sentence minutes after he pleaded guilty to the charge.
In Nigeria, the flamboyant practice of flinging banknotes during weddings is a time-honored tradition meant to showcase wealth and joy. However, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has been cracking down on the practice, arguing that it disrespects the naira—one of the nation’s most treasured symbols. Under the 2007 Central Bank of Nigeria Act, the act of "spraying, dancing, or marching" on the naira is considered an offense, punishable by a minimum of six months in prison or a 50,000 naira fine, or both.
The EFCC noted that during the festive celebration, Amuscap tampered with 100,000 naira by flamboyantly throwing the notes into the air. This case follows similar instances where public figures, including a transgender influencer known as Bobrisky and actress Oluwadarasimi Omoseyin, faced prison time for the same act.
The sentencing has sparked a heated debate on social media, with many users criticizing what they see as a disproportionate punishment. Critics argue that while extravagant spending by corrupt elites often goes unpunished, individuals like Amuscap are facing strict penalties for celebrating their own wealth.
This incident not only highlights the cultural significance of cash-spraying in Nigerian celebrations but also the ongoing tension between tradition and regulation in a country striving to protect its national currency.
