Disney Unveils Bold Future For Theme Parks And Cruises Amid Slumping Attendance
In response to a recent earnings report revealing declining attendance at domestic parks, Disney has announced an ambitious array of future projects for its theme parks and cruise lines. These exciting developments include a villains-themed land, an "Encanto" ride, the chance to take flight like Iron Man, and advanced audio-animatronic technology that will bring Walt Disney to life before guests' eyes.
The announcements were made during Disney's biannual D23 convention, where fans had long been eager for more concrete details on upcoming projects. At a high-energy presentation at the Honda Center in Anaheim, California, 12,000 attendees finally learned how Disney's promised $60 billion investment in parks and cruises will unfold over the next decade.
In an interview with CNN, Josh D’Amaro, Chairperson of Walt Disney Parks and Resorts, emphasized the company's innovative approach: “We’re leveraging technology like never before, not just for the sake of it, but to create magical, almost mind-bending experiences.”
Here’s a glimpse into the magical future Disney has in store:
What's Coming to Walt Disney World in Florida
Magic Kingdom is set for its largest expansion ever, with new lands themed to Disney villains and Pixar's Cars. The villains-themed area, shrouded in mystery, will feature two major rides, while the Cars area will offer an off-road adventure with both thrill and family-friendly rides, set to break ground in 2025. Additionally, a new nighttime parade, "Disney Starlight," will light up the Magic Kingdom skies in the summer of 2025.
At Disney’s Hollywood Studios, a new "Monstropolis" land based on Monsters Inc. will feature the park's first suspended coaster, taking guests on a thrilling ride through the Monsters Inc. factory. Billy Crystal, the voice of Mike Wazowski, unveiled this exciting development.
Disney’s Animal Kingdom will introduce the Tropical Americas area in 2027, complete with the first-ever Encanto ride and a new "Indiana Jones" adventure. The new area will also feature a central town, Pueblo Esperanza, and a Zootopia show under the Tree of Life, opening between late 2025 and early 2026.
At EPCOT, a revamped Test Track will debut in 2025, alongside a new Spaceship Earth lounge overlooking Dreamer’s Point, where a statue of Walt Disney stands.
What's Coming to Disneyland Resort in California
Disneyland will celebrate its 70th anniversary in 2025 with the introduction of the first-ever audio-animatronic version of Walt Disney, using cutting-edge technology to bring him to life in a stage show at the Main Street Opera House.
Disneyland’s former Splash Mountain will reopen as Tiana’s Bayou Adventure on November 15, and across the esplanade, Avengers Campus at Disney California Adventure will double in size. New attractions will include "Avengers Infinity Defense," where guests will battle alongside the Avengers, and "Stark Flight Lab," offering the chance to take flight like Iron Man.
In 2026, Disney California Adventure will introduce a new ride themed to Pixar’s Coco, as well as an all-new Avatar land based on Avatar: The Way of Water and future films.
What's Coming to Disney Cruise Line
Disney Cruise Line will nearly triple its fleet by 2031, adding four new ships to its existing five. The new Disney Destiny ship will feature a Hercules stage musical. This expansion marks a significant turnaround for the cruise industry, which faced uncertainty during the pandemic.
What's Coming to International Disney Parks
Internationally, Shanghai Disneyland and Hong Kong Disneyland will introduce new Marvel-themed rides, while Disneyland Paris will debut its first-ever Lion King attraction and a new nighttime show at Adventure Bay. Tokyo Disneyland and Disneyland Paris will also introduce new nighttime shows.
Disney and Epic Games
In a surprising announcement, Disney revealed new characters from its franchises, including Star Wars and Pixar’s The Incredibles, will be joining the popular game Fortnite as part of a $1.5 billion equity investment in Epic Games.
Tom Bricker of Disney Tourist Blog noted that the detailed concept art and specific timelines will help ease skepticism among loyal fans, while Victoria Wade, a D23 fan, expressed excitement, saying, "We are so back, baby."
