Britney Spears’ Journey: From Memoir To Biopic

Britney Spears' captivating story is set to hit the big screen!

Universal Pictures has secured the rights to Spears' bestselling memoir, "The Woman in Me," which is being adapted into a biopic about the pop icon's life, CNN confirms with the studio.

Jon M. Chu, known for directing "Crazy Rich Asians" and the upcoming "Wicked" film, will helm the project. Oscar-nominated producer Marc Platt, known for his work on "Wicked" and "La La Land," is set to produce.

Spears shared her excitement on X, posting, “Excited to share with my fans that I’ve been working on a secret project with #MarcPlatt. He’s always made my favorite movies … stay tuned!”

Universal won the rights to the memoir after a fierce bidding war with other major studios and streaming platforms, according to sources close to the project.

While details of Spears' involvement in the film remain under wraps, a source close to the singer reveals she will play a role in the project.

Published in October 2023, "The Woman in Me" marks the first time Spears has shared her life story from her own perspective. The memoir chronicles her journey from her humble beginnings in Mississippi to achieving unparalleled fame, navigating motherhood, her faith, and her quest for freedom.

Spears released the book nearly two years after the end of her 13-year conservatorship in 2021. In April 2024, she settled with her estranged father, who served as her conservator, officially closing that chapter of her life.

In recent years, Spears has been candid about her tumultuous childhood and complex relationship with her family. These themes, along with her meteoric rise to fame and struggles with global celebrity, are expected to be central to the biopic.

“Written with remarkable candor and humor, Spears’ groundbreaking book illuminates the enduring power of music and love – and the importance of a woman telling her own story, on her own terms,” Universal describes.

The audiobook, narrated by actress Michelle Williams, broke records as Simon & Schuster’s fastest-selling audiobook and the most listened-to audiobook on Spotify in 2023.

Casting details for the biopic are yet to be announced.

This project adds to Universal’s growing portfolio of music-based films, including "Straight Outta Compton" (2015), "8 Mile" (2002), and upcoming biopics on Snoop Dogg and Prince.

Spears' last major studio film was "Crossroads" in 2002, a beloved coming-of-age film where she starred alongside Zoe Saldana and Taryn Manning. Spears also co-executive produced the movie, written by Shonda Rhimes.
