Toll Rises in Israel-Hamas Conflict

In a harrowing update on X, UNRWA revealed that since the commencement of the Israel-Hamas war on October 7, at least 308 individuals seeking refuge in the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestinian Refugees (UNRWA) shelters have lost their lives, with an additional 1,095 sustaining injuries. These heartbreaking numbers underscore the human cost of the ongoing conflict.

Disturbingly, on December 25, the UNRWA reported a grim incident at the Maghazi Prep School, stating that two individuals seeking shelter were killed and one injured due to a direct strike. The gravity of these events is intensified by the challenges of independently verifying the reported figures, as CNN has not been able to confirm the accuracy of these statistics.

Thursday saw the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) responding to inquiries by acknowledging their engagement in operations against Hamas targets in the Gaza Strip. The IDF's statement on the matter clarified that on December 24, 2023, IAF fighter jets targeted areas adjacent to known Hamas operatives. Tragically, the strikes in the Al-Maghazi refugee camp resulted in approximately 70 casualties, as reported by the Hamas-controlled Health Ministry.

The IDF acknowledged the occurrence of what they termed "unintended harm" to civilians during the air strikes in central Gaza on December 24. The IDF asserted that measures were taken to minimize harm to civilians before the strikes, but a preliminary investigation revealed unintended consequences. Expressing regret for the harm caused to uninvolved civilians, the IDF announced a thorough investigation into the incident through the General Staff’s Fact Finding and Assessment Mechanism.

The situation on the ground is dire, with nearly 1.4 million displaced individuals seeking refuge in 156 UNRWA installations. An additional 500,000 individuals are registered with UNRWA, accessing vital services. Shockingly, UNRWA disclosed that the average number of internally displaced people in their shelters exceeds four times their capacity, with over 12,000 seeking shelter in the middle and southern areas.

Complicating matters further is the IDF's warning to residents in central Gaza on Thursday, urging them to evacuate urgently as operations against Hamas persist. The IDF issued this caution via X, formerly Twitter, instructing people in 15 identified blocks, including the Al-Bureij refugee camp, to move to shelters. However, the lack of communication and internet access in Gaza, hampered by Israeli air strikes, poses challenges in disseminating these urgent instructions to the affected population.

As the conflict continues to unfold, the toll on civilians and the challenges of ensuring their safety remain at the forefront of international concern.
