SpaceX Valued at $180 Billion in Secondary Market Share Sale

Elon Musk’s SpaceX is preparing an insider share sale that values the commercial rocket company nearly at $180 billion, Bloomberg reported Wednesday, capping off a year when the company has carried out multiple crewed launches for NASA while expanding the footprint of its Starlink satellite internet service.

KEY FACTS

According to Bloomberg, the planned sale values each SpaceX share at $97, slightly higher than the $95 per share price reported by the outlet last week.

The company is planning a tender offer valued between $500 million to $750 million, although its size could still change, the report added.

The share sale comes after a busy 2023 for SpaceX, which has seen the company carry out more than 90 successful launches this year.

BIG NUMBER

More than 2 million. That is how many active customers SpaceX’s satellite internet division reported in September this year and more than double the 1 million subscribers the company reported in December last year.

SURPRISING FACT

The $180 billion valuation makes SpaceX the world's second most valuable startup only behind TikTok’s parent company ByteDance, which earlier this month offered to buy back shares at a price that valued the company at $268 billion.

KEY BACKGROUND

In January, SpaceX raised $750 million in a funding round led by the venture capital firm Andreessen Horowitz which valued the company at $137 billion. Last December, the company carried out a secondary market share sale that valued it at $140 billion.

NOIRETV VALUATION

According to our estimates, Musk’s net worth stands at $243.1 billion, making him the world’s richest person by a sizeable margin. The number is still a far cry though from a peak of $320 billion in November 2021, when the share price of Tesla—Musk’s other major company—hit an all-time high.
