Sebastian Zapeta, accused of setting a woman on fire inside a subway train, appears in court in New  York, on Tuesday, Dec. 24, 2024. The New York Police Department released information Tuesday about the woman who died in a subway car in December after reportedly being set on fire, further debunking false information and political narratives that spread online about the victim. Key Facts Police officials say that on Dec. 22, a man set fire to a sleeping woman, now identified as Debrina Kawam, in a stopped subway car, leading to Kawam’s death and the  subsequent arrest and charging  of undocumented immigrant Sebastian Zapeta-Calil for murder and arson. Norovirus, Covid And RSV Are Surging This Winter. Here’s What To Know

Image
TOPSHOT - An Egyptian doctor wearing two protective masks checks a patient's lung X-ray at the  infectious diseases unit of the Imbaba hospital in the capital Cairo, on April 19,2020, during the novel coronavirus pandemic crisis. Recent data from the Centers for Disease Control shows spikes in norovirus, Covid-19 and RSV across the U.S.—a resurgence that’s potentially unlike the usual annual winter spread of these illnesses, which have been less active in recent months. Key Facts Norovirus is a  contagious virus  that typically presents as projectile vomiting and diarrhea after ingesting contaminated food or drink, interacting with contaminated surfaces or interacting with a sick individual, and it is the most common foodborne virus. Reported norovirus cases spiked in late November and grew by nearly 31% percent increase to 91 reported outbreaks nationally in the first week of December—the highest level of the year and a near  three-year high ; from 2021 to 20...

U.S. Mass Shootings And Gun Deaths Fell To Lowest Level In Five Years In 2024

Image
Police officers take security measures after eight people, five adults and three children, were shot  in the area of West 52nd Street in Chicago, Illinois, United States on April 13, 2024. This year is on track to see the fewest mass shootings and gun deaths in the U.S. since 2019, according to data from Gun Violence Archive—a feat that comes as violent crime broadly continues to fall after the COVID-19 pandemic. Key Facts The U.S. recorded 491 mass shootings as of Dec. 18—the lowest number since 2019, which saw 414—marking a 25% decline in mass shootings from last year and a nearly 30% decline from 2021, which saw the most mass shootings in the last decade. The decrease follows a near-high number in 2023, which saw the second-highest number of mass shootings (656) since  Gun Violence Archive  began tracking mass shootings—defined as a shooting in which at least four people, not including the shooter, are injured or killed—in 2014. Some 500 people have been killed ...

Elon Musk Sparks Controversy With Far-Right Endorsement Ahead Of German Election

Image
The German government has accused U.S. billionaire Elon Musk of attempting to sway Germany’s upcoming parliamentary election in February by supporting the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) party. Despite labeling Musk’s comments as “nonsense,” officials voiced concern over his influence. Musk, who is slated to advise Donald Trump’s new administration, expressed his endorsement of the AfD in a guest opinion piece for Welt am Sonntag , sparking backlash that led to the resignation of the commentary editor in protest. “It is indeed the case that Elon Musk is trying to influence the federal election,” a German government spokesperson confirmed, referencing both Musk’s opinion piece and his posts on the social media platform X. While emphasizing Musk’s right to free speech, the spokesperson remarked, “Freedom of opinion also covers the greatest nonsense.” Defending his involvement in German politics, Musk cited his significant investments in the country and praised the AfD’s stance...

The Asia-Pacific Gamble: Navigating Trump’s Uncertain Return

Image
The impending return of Donald Trump to the White House has sparked uncertainty among America’s allies in Asia, arriving at a time of heightened regional tensions. With China modernizing its military and escalating territorial assertions, North Korea’s increased belligerence, and both nations deepening ties with a wartime Russia, the stakes have rarely been higher. A Region on Edge For decades, the U.S. has been the cornerstone of security in the Asia-Pacific, maintaining more active-duty troops there than anywhere else globally. These forces are stationed across key allies like South Korea and Japan, with the U.S. bound by treaty to protect them if attacked. Yet, these nations are now bracing for the return of a president who has criticized allies for insufficient defense spending, embraced autocrats, and championed an “America First” approach. The question looming over the region: What will Trump 2.0 mean for America’s alliances and security commitments? Concerns abound. Will Trump d...

Court Upholds $5M Verdict Against Trump In Carroll Sexual Abuse Case

Image
A federal appeals court upheld a jury’s verdict finding former President Donald Trump sexually abused writer E. Jean Carroll and denied his request for a new trial. Trump had challenged the $5 million civil verdict, arguing that the trial judge made multiple errors, including allowing testimony from two other women who claimed Trump had also sexually assaulted them. However, the appeals court concluded that the trial judge acted within his discretion in ruling on the evidence. Even if minor errors occurred, the court stated that Carroll’s strong case outweighed any potential issues, rendering a new trial unnecessary. “Both E. Jean Carroll and I are gratified by today’s decision. We thank the Second Circuit for its careful consideration of the parties’ arguments,” said Roberta Kaplan, Carroll’s attorney. In addition to the $5 million verdict, a separate jury awarded Carroll $83.3 million after finding that Trump defamed her by denying the allegations. Trump has appealed this verdict...

Five Years On: WHO Urges China To Shed Light On COVID-19 Origins

Image
The World Health Organization (WHO) has called on China to share critical data to uncover the origins of COVID-19, five years after the pandemic began in the city of Wuhan. On December 31, 2019, the WHO’s China office reported a cluster of “pneumonia” cases in a statement from Wuhan health authorities. Just over three weeks later, the city of 11 million was locked down. Despite these measures, the coronavirus had already spread beyond China’s borders, igniting a global health crisis. While many countries have moved on from the era of lockdowns and restrictions, the origins of the virus remain a contentious and unresolved issue. The pandemic has claimed at least seven million lives, overwhelmed healthcare systems, and disrupted the global economy. According to experts, China’s lack of transparency has hindered the search for answers. “We continue to call on China to share data and provide access to understand the origins of COVID-19. This is a moral and scientific imperative,” the WHO s...

Chinese Cyber Attack Hits US Treasury: A Deep Dive Into The Breach

Image
The US Treasury Department has alerted lawmakers about a significant cybersecurity breach, described by officials as a "major incident." According to a letter reviewed by CNN, the breach was orchestrated by a Chinese state-sponsored Advanced Persistent Threat (APT) actor, targeting Treasury workstations and unclassified documents. How the Breach Was Discovered The intrusion was first identified on December 8 when a third-party software provider, BeyondTrust, informed the Treasury Department that hackers had exploited a stolen key to gain remote access. "Based on available indicators, the incident has been attributed to a Chinese state-sponsored Advanced Persistent Threat actor," wrote Aditi Hardikar, Assistant Secretary for Management at the Treasury. Immediate Response A Treasury spokesperson confirmed the compromised service was promptly taken offline. Efforts are underway in collaboration with law enforcement and the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security ...
