Regal Robbery: Duke of Westminster's Stately Heist Unveiled
In a royal twist of events, the Duke of Westminster, Hugh Grosvenor, found himself at the center of a high-profile burglary at his family's estate, Eaton Hall in Cheshire. The billionaire aristocrat, known for his extensive land holdings, lost a staggering £42,000 worth of watches during a redecoration spree.
Last August, while decorators were enhancing the grandeur of Eaton Hall, a crafty workman seized the opportunity to pilfer the Duke's bedroom. The stolen loot included a £30,000 Cartier London Tank JC wristwatch, a Panerai Luminor Marina watch, and a Breitling watch, each valued at £6,000. Astonishingly, the Duke only realized the absence of these timepieces three weeks later when he sought to don the missing Cartier.
The 32-year-old Duke, with a net worth estimated at £9.42 billion, had reportedly commissioned the redecoration for various rooms in the mansion, excluding his personal quarters. The audacious burglary at the sprawling 10,872-acre estate remained under wraps until recently when two suspects were apprehended and charged.
Matthew Turner, a 24-year-old from Great Sutton, pleaded guilty to the burglary at Chester magistrates court last Friday. He also confessed to an unrelated sneak theft of £60 from a tire shop and awaits sentencing at Chester Crown Court. On the other hand, Nathan Elliot, 30, from Whitby, Ellesmere Port, faced charges of handling the stolen Cartier but pleaded not guilty, opting for a trial.
The court proceedings revealed the significant value of the stolen goods, totaling £42,000, prompting the prosecution to push for a crown court trial. Turner's lawyer acknowledged the gravity of the offense but emphasized that the final sentence might differ from the suggested 12 months.
While Turner awaits his fate, the Duke, third child and only son of the late Duke of Westminster, Gerald Grosvenor, remains distanced from the courtroom drama. Raised alongside his three sisters at Eaton Hall, Hugh Grosvenor shares close ties with Princes William and Harry. Educated in prestigious institutions, he graduated from Newcastle University with a degree in Countryside Management.
Hugh, initially titled Earl Grosvenor until 2016, assumed the role of the seventh Duke after his father's passing. Previously hailed as Britain's most eligible bachelor, he surprised the public by announcing his engagement to Olivia Grace Henson in April. The couple is set to tie the knot on June 7, 2024, at Chester Cathedral.
Eaton Hall, a historic seat of the Grosvenor family since the 15th century, witnessed various architectural transformations. The current French château-style mansion, surrounded by formal gardens, parkland, farmland, and woodland, stands as a testament to the family's enduring legacy. In this regal setting, the Duke's recent encounter with burglary adds an unexpected chapter to the storied history of Eaton Hall.
