Lionel Messi's Iconic World Cup Jersey Headed to Auction for Charity

Lionel Messi's historic World Cup final jersey, worn during Argentina's thrilling victory against France in the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, is set to be part of a remarkable collection of his national team shirts. The entire set, comprising six jerseys from various pivotal matches, is scheduled for auction at Sotheby's in New York, with experts anticipating a potential world record sale exceeding £8 million.

The collection includes jerseys from the intense final, the gripping semi-final clash against Croatia, the hard-fought quarter-final versus the Netherlands, and the round-of-16 battle against Australia. Additionally, two jerseys from the group-stage games are part of the ensemble, making it a comprehensive representation of Messi's journey to World Cup glory. The estimated price for this extraordinary collection is set at a minimum of $10 million (£8 million), poised to break records as the most valuable 'sports memorabilia collection.'

For context, the current record for sports memorabilia is held by Michael Jordan's Chicago Bulls jersey from the 1998 NBA Finals Game 1, famously known from the 'Last Dance' season, which fetched £8.1 million in September of the previous year at Sotheby's New York.

Comparatively, the highest-priced music memorabilia to date is Kurt Cobain's guitar used during an MTV Unplugged performance in 1993, selling for £4.2 million in 2020.

Brahm Wachter, Sotheby's head of modern collectibles, remarked, "The 2022 FIFA World Cup stands as one of the greatest events in sports history, intrinsically connected to Messi's valiant journey and firmly establishing his status as the greatest player of all time."

He added, "The sale of these six shirts stands as a monumental occasion in auction history, offering fans and collectors a connection to Messi's crowning achievement. It is an honor for Sotheby's to present and exhibit these invaluable collectibles to the public, which encapsulate the sheer brilliance of a player who has redefined the boundaries of football excellence."

Notably, Messi's jerseys have been previously auctioned, with the current record standing at £360,000 for a jersey worn during the 2017 El Clásico between Real Madrid and Barcelona, where he scored an injury-time winner at the Bernabeu.

This upcoming auction, organized by US-based tech startup AC Momento, not only provides fans with a chance to own a piece of football history but also contributes to a charitable cause. A portion of the proceeds from the auction will be donated to the UNICAS Project, led by Sant Joan de Déu (SJD) Barcelona Children’s Hospital, with the support of the Leo Messi Foundation. The project aims to meet the needs of children suffering from rare diseases, building upon the Leo Messi Foundation's previous collaboration with the SJD Barcelona Children’s Hospital Pediatric Cancer Center.

Sports enthusiasts and collectors alike can view this extraordinary collection at Sotheby's New York during a free, public exhibition from November 30 to December 14—the same period in which bids will be accepted. Don't miss the opportunity to be part of this historic event that combines football greatness with philanthropy.
