Lionel Messi Secures Eighth Ballon d'Or Glory at Star-Studded 2023 Ceremony
Lionel Messi clinched his record-breaking eighth Ballon d'Or title, affirming his status as the finest male footballer at the illustrious 2023 awards ceremony, thanks to his extraordinary performances for both Paris Saint-Germain and Argentina.
Before his summer move to Inter Miami, the 36-year-old maestro orchestrated Argentina's triumph in the 2022 World Cup, leaving an indelible mark by scoring twice in the final in Qatar and securing victory during a nerve-wracking penalty shootout against the 2018 champions, France.
Furthermore, Messi netted an impressive 32 goals in 55 games across all competitions for PSG, a monumental contribution that aided his team in claiming the Ligue 1 title.
At the grand event held at the Theatre du Chatelet in Paris, David Beckham, co-owner of Inter Miami, had the honor of presenting Messi with the coveted award, setting off a thunderous standing ovation from the enthusiastic audience.
In a heartwarming speech, Messi shared, "It's truly special to be here once again, savoring this moment and reflecting on my World Cup triumph and realizing my dreams."
When the ceremony's host, Didier Drogba, inquired whether this Ballon d'Or was more significant given the World Cup win, Messi replied, "They're all special." He continued, "I could never have imagined the incredible career I've had, the countless achievements, and the privilege of being part of the best team in history. Winning the Copa America and securing the World Cup after facing numerous challenges with the national team are truly exceptional."
Beckham, speaking about Messi's recent association with Inter Miami, remarked, "It's extraordinarily special to call him a Miami player and welcome him to our city. He'll celebrate this achievement with his teammates and family in his unique way. We'll ensure we throw a Miami-style celebration. I'm confident it will be an unforgettable party."
Despite fierce competition, the four-time Champions League winner emerged victorious, besting formidable opponents such as Erling Haaland, who secured second place, Kylian Mbappe in third, and Kevin De Bruyne in fourth.
Impressively, seven Manchester City players made it to the rankings, with Haaland, De Bruyne, Rodri, Julian Alvarez, and Bernardo Silva claiming spots in the top ten. The night also belonged to the Premier League champions, who received the accolade for the best team.
On the women's front, Aitana Bonmati, who played a pivotal role in Spain's World Cup victory and shone as the tournament's best player, was crowned with the women's Ballon d'Or. Her contributions extended to helping Barcelona clinch their fourth consecutive Liga F title and securing the women's Champions League, marking their second European triumph in three seasons.
Accepting her award with grace, Bonmati said, "I'm incredibly proud to receive the Ballon d'Or. Football is a team sport, so I'd like to dedicate this honor to my teammates and staff. As role models, we have a responsibility both on and off the pitch. We should be more than athletes, setting examples and striving for a better, more peaceful, and equal world."
Notably, Chelsea's Sam Kerr claimed second place in the women's Ballon d'Or rankings, while Barcelona stars Salma Paralluelo and Fridolina Rolfo secured the third and fourth positions.
England's Lionesses, Mary Earps and Rachel Daly, also made it to the top ten, with Earps ranking fifth and Daly finishing in the tenth spot.
Even though Erling Haaland secured the runner-up position, he didn't leave the ceremony empty-handed, as he was awarded the Gerd Muller Trophy for the best striker. Speaking about his achievement, Haaland praised his teammates and credited their support for his prolific scoring.
The charismatic striker also shared some wisdom on goal-scoring, emphasizing the importance of staying focused and hungry for success.
Vinicius Jr. claimed the sixth spot in the top ten, right behind Rodri, and was acknowledged with the Socrates award for his remarkable efforts off the pitch in the fight against racism.
Napoli star Victor Osimhen, with his impressive 31 goals in 39 games, secured the eighth position, one step ahead of Manchester City's Silva. Real Madrid's Luka Modric occupied the tenth spot in the rankings, narrowly edging out Liverpool's Mohamed Salah, despite Salah's standout performances in the 2022-23 season.
The Premier League also had its share of recognition, with Arsenal's Bukayo Saka and Martin Odegaard securing the 24th and 28th positions, respectively.
In a surprising turn of events, Aston Villa goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez, ranked 15th, was met with mixed reactions from the audience when he received the Yashin award. Nevertheless, former Chelsea star Didier Drogba stepped in to urge the fans to show respect.
Barcelona's Ilkay Gundogan finished just below Martinez in the 14th position, and Al-Ittihad striker Karim Benzema secured the 16th spot in the prestigious rankings.
