Harry Kane Praises England Team for Cool Qualification to Euro 2024
Harry Kane has showered praise on his England compatriots for their composed performance that sealed their qualification for the 2024 European Championships. In a remarkable turn of events, Kane also etched his name into history as Wembley's top goal scorer.
The Three Lions needed just one point to secure their spot against the Azzurri, as their Group C counterparts, Italy and Ukraine, were still set to face off in the qualifying rounds.
Both Harry Kane and Marcus Rashford found the target, steering Gareth Southgate's team to a stunning comeback against the Euro 2020 champions. Kane's two goals saw him surpass Bobby Charlton's 1970 record for the most goals scored at Wembley.
Speaking to Channel 4, Kane reflected on the journey, saying, "It's never as straightforward as it appears. We had a demanding group this time, but credit to the lads, the results we've achieved, and the performances. We capped it off today. Falling behind 1-0, we kept our composure and stayed focused. We were confident in our ability to secure the victory, and we did exactly that. Qualifying with two games to spare is a testament to everyone involved."
He continued, "I cherish Wembley; it's our fortress. Over the years, we've solidified its reputation, and with a packed stadium, the fans are thoroughly enjoying it. We wanted to repay them with resounding triumphs and outstanding performances, and today, we delivered."
Regarding his second goal, Kane remarked, "Towards the end, there were a few of us chasing down stray balls, aiding the team's push up the field. I displayed a burst of speed, not usually my forte. It felt great to seal the deal and put the game to rest."
Kane's double marked his 11th brace for England, with only Nat Lofthouse (12) achieving multiple goals in a game more times for the national side.
With their place secured in Euro 2024, the Three Lions now have their sights set on building upon their recent tournament successes, which include a semi-final appearance in the 2018 World Cup, the final in Euro 2020, and the quarter-finals in the 2022 World Cup, culminating in a narrow loss to France.
Before their showdown on Tuesday, England had triumphed over Italy, Ukraine, Malta, and North Macedonia, with the lone hiccup being a draw in the return match against Ukraine last month.
