King Charles Elevates His 'Dashing' Aide to 'Super Equerry'
King Charles has recently promoted his esteemed aide, Lieutenant Colonel Johnny Thompson, to the distinguished position of 'super equerry,' solidifying Thompson as the monarch's right-hand man.
Lt. Col. Johnny Thompson, renowned for his appearances in a kilt alongside the royal family, was said to be planning to leave the Army within 18 months, thus concluding his role as an equerry, according to insider information shared with The Sun. However, he has now been entrusted with the task of overseeing King Charles' private matters, a significant promotion from his previous role as an equerry. Thompson, aged 40, earned this advancement through his charisma and charm, endearing himself to both the King and Queen Camilla.
Residing in Surrey, Thompson initially won over admirers when he was spotted at Queen Elizabeth II's funeral, prompting royal watchers to affectionately refer to him as a 'hunk.' Since then, his public presence has continued to grow, with appearances at the King's coronation further enhancing his reputation.
Sources within the royal circle suggest that with his new title, 'super equerry,' Thompson will become a more prominent figure in royal affairs, indicating that King Charles made a shrewd choice in selecting a social media sensation as his right-hand man.
Thompson, a member of the 5th Battalion Royal Regiment of Scotland, serves as an equerry, an officer of the royal household tasked with aiding members of the royal family. His responsibilities include assisting the King with his daily duties, accompanying him to public events, and overseeing the maintenance of the monarch's carriages, coaches, and Rolls-Royces used in state ceremonies.
Once the Queen's most senior bodyguard, Thompson now stands proudly at King Charles' side during royal events, and his role has evolved to that of 'super equerry,' signifying his crucial position as the King's closest confidant. Buckingham Palace has been approached for comment regarding this report.
Earlier this year, Thompson achieved the remarkable feat of ranking third on Tatler's Social Power Index, a compilation of influential figures in Britain. Notably, he secured a spot just behind King Charles and Queen Camilla, who held the top position, and billionaire businessman Sanjay and his fashion designer wife Anu Hinduja at number two.
Described as 'Major Eye Candy' on TikTok and affectionately known as 'Johnny' by friends, Thompson has become one of the UK's influential personalities, as recognized by Tatler. The publication commended his 'fabulous sense of humor' and his ability to exude charm in both suits and kilts. Tatler stated, "It is from within the palace walls that the King’s equerry wields his unique brand of quiet, charming power." His public appearances, such as at the coronation and gallery openings, have only further endeared him to the public.
During the coronation in May, viewers took to social media to not only discuss the crowning of the monarch but also to admire the striking figure accompanying King Charles. Comments ranged from acknowledging his beauty to his strong calves, making him a significant point of discussion during the event.
Thompson first captured the hearts of royal watchers after he took center stage at historic royal occasions following the Queen's passing. His composed demeanor, as he cleared clutter from the King's desk during Charles' proclamation signing, was admired by many. Thompson also participated in the procession during the transfer of the Queen's coffin from Buckingham Palace to Westminster Hall and had encounters with notable figures, including Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and former Prime Minister Liz Truss.
He was even spotted standing behind Prince Harry and Meghan Markle at the Platinum Jubilee celebration National Service of Thanksgiving at St Paul’s Cathedral last June. Notably, his striking presence has led some to suggest that he could be the next James Bond, with fans even dubbing him '007 in real life.'
