American Teen Arrested In Paris After Newborn's Tragic Death

A teenage American tourist has been arrested in Paris after her newborn baby was allegedly thrown out of a hotel window and later died, according to French authorities and media reports.

Incident in Paris

The young woman, whose identity has not been disclosed, was taken to the hospital for surgery after giving birth. She was then placed under police custody, the Paris Prosecutor’s Office confirmed.

Authorities stated that the newborn “was allegedly thrown out of a second-floor window” at a hotel in the 20th arrondissement on Monday. The infant was rushed to emergency care but did not survive.

“The mother, an American citizen, was part of a group of young adults traveling in Europe,” the prosecutor’s office said, adding that an investigation into the homicide of a minor has been launched. Officials also noted the possibility that the woman was unaware of her pregnancy or in denial about it.

Discovery of the Newborn

A spokesperson for the local mayor’s office said the baby was found alive in a trash bin near the hotel and was transported to Necker-Enfants Malades Hospital, where the child later succumbed to injuries.

Reactions from Witnesses and Authorities

Residents in the area were shocked by the tragedy. Maria, a caretaker in a building opposite the Ibis hotel where the incident occurred, recalled being awakened by sirens in the early hours of Monday.

“There were police cars and ambulances,” she said. “At first, we thought it might be gang-related, but when we learned what had happened, we were devastated.”

Maria, who has lived in the neighborhood for over 30 years, described it as a quiet area with very few tourists.

US Embassy Response

The U.S. Embassy in Paris acknowledged reports of the arrest and stated it was closely monitoring the case.

“We are deeply saddened to learn of the recent tragedy involving the loss of a young life,” the embassy said in a statement.

French media outlets, including Paris Match, first reported the case, with AFP and Le Parisien identifying the woman as 18 years old.

Ongoing Investigation

French authorities continue their investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident. More details are expected as the case develops.
