Lesotho’s Foreign Minister Responds To Trump’s Remarks
Lesotho’s foreign minister, Lejone Mpotjoane, expressed shock and disappointment over US President Donald Trump’s recent comments dismissing the African nation as obscure.
During his address to Congress, Trump criticized foreign aid spending, including $8 million allocated to LGBTQI+ programs in Lesotho, stating, “which nobody has ever heard of,” a remark that drew laughter from the audience.
Mpotjoane called the statement “quite insulting” and emphasized Lesotho’s unique significance on the global stage. The mountainous country, home to about two million people and entirely surrounded by South Africa, is often referred to as The Kingdom in the Sky due to its high altitude.
Invitation to Visit Lesotho
In response, Mpotjoane extended an invitation for Trump and the world to visit Lesotho, highlighting its cultural and geographical significance.
While acknowledging that US-funded organizations support LGBTQ+ rights in Lesotho, he also noted that American aid has played a crucial role in the country’s health and agricultural sectors.
Impact of US Aid Cuts
Trump’s administration has reduced billions in foreign aid as part of its “America First” policy. Lesotho, which has long relied on US assistance for healthcare, is now exploring ways to achieve greater self-sufficiency.
Mpotjoane accepted the US president’s right to adjust aid policies but criticized the manner in which Lesotho was referenced, calling it “quite unfortunate.”
