Mike Pence Says He Can’t Endorse Trump In ‘Good Conscience’
Pence said he can’t in “good conscience endorse Donald Trump” during an interview with Fox News.
The ex-vice president said Trump is pursuing an agenda “that is at odds with the conservative agenda that we governed on during our four years.”
Pence’s comments should come as little surprise, as he told reporters last year those who put themselves above the Constitution “should never be president,” referencing Trump’s election interference case.
Friction between Pence and Trump materialized after the Jan. 6 Capitol attack, which Trump has said is Pence’s fault for not returning disputed electoral slates to state legislators.
TANGENT
A judge dismissed six counts against Trump in his Georgia election interference case. Trump still faces seven racketeering charges in the case, which Fulton County Special Prosecutor Nathan Wade resigned from Friday after Judge Scott McAfee ruled Wade or District Attorney Fani Willis had to step down, citing the “appearance of impropriety.”
KEY BACKGROUND
Pence, who suspended his presidential campaign in October, has publicly feuded with Trump throughout the leadup to the election. In addition to telling reporters anyone who puts themselves above the Constitution “should never be president,” Pence also said Trump was “surrounded by a group of crackpot lawyers” in the lead up to Jan. 6. Trump fired back in a post on Truth Social, saying the former vice president was attracting no crowds and “didn’t fight against election fraud.” Trump has also accused Pence in a court filing of trying to “curry favor” with prosecutors to avoid criminal charges for retaining classified documents. Pence was under investigation by the DOJ for classified documents found at his home, though the probe eventually concluded with no charges against Pence.
