Trump Says U.S. Won’t Leave NATO If European Countries ‘Play Fair,’ Report Says

Election 2024 Trump

The former president has criticized the alliance for years.

Former President Donald Trump said in an interview slated to air Tuesday that the U.S. will remain in NATO if he’s reelected, Politico reported, amid mounting fears that the U.S. would quit the alliance during a second Trump term after his most recent series of controversial remarks.

In an interview with Nigel Farage, former UK Independence Party leader and Trump ally, Trump said NATO “has to treat the U.S. fairly,” adding that if it wasn’t for the U.S. “NATO literally doesn't even exist” while encouraging European nations to “play fair,” according to Politico.

Trump also reportedly said the U.S. would come to the defense of NATO allies under attack, and went on to say all involved parties should pay their “fair share”—echoing recent criticisms of the contributions of European members to aid Ukraine.

Politico reported the former president also warned NATO members to “not take advantage” of the nation’s support.

WHAT TO WATCH FOR

The interview is set to air on the U.K.’s GB News on Tuesday evening.

CRUCIAL QUOTE

“NATO has to treat the U.S. fairly, because if it's not for the United States, NATO literally doesn't even exist," Trump reportedly said.

KEY BACKGROUND

Trump has been a vocal critic of NATO for years, even threatening to pull out of the alliance during a 2018 summit. More recently, the former president has criticized funds being sent to Ukraine to aid in its war against Russia—alleging European members were paying less than the U.S. and saying he would encourage Russia to “do whatever the hell they want” if member countries don’t pay more. Trump’s comments were met with criticism from Democrats and some Republicans alike. President Joe Biden also criticized Trump’s comments, saying that he “has set a dangerous, and shockingly, frankly un-American signal to the world,” eventually launching an ad campaign blasting the former president’s remarks.

ANGENT

Former national security adviser John Bolton previously told CNN’s Jim Sciutto in his book “The Return of Great Powers” he believes the nation’s role in the NATO alliance “would be in real jeopardy” if Trump were to be reelected, adding that he thought Trump would try to withdraw during a second term.
