Verizon Seemingly Confirms Beyoncé Starring In Super Bowl Ad—Here’s What We Know
KEY FACTS
Verizon on Friday posted to X, the platform formerly called Twitter, a video of comedian Tony Hale standing in front of a green screen next to the “Renaissance”-esque horse—named Reneigh by fans—asking it, “So should we be in a Super Bowl commercial? Yay or nay?”
Eagle-eared fans also noticed the end of the clip seemingly features Beyoncé’s song “My House," the second time the company has thrown the song into a teaser for its big game ad.
Verizon first sent fans into a hint-seeking frenzy two days ago when it dropped a commercial teaser that featured Hale surrounded by crates of lemons and making the comment “She wants me to squeeze all these lemons by myself?” he says. “This better work.”
Fans assumed the lemon-filled tease was a nod to her 2016 album "Lemonade” and the clip also seemed to feature “My House” in the final second.
Verizon's Super Bowl ad strategy reportedly includes a collaboration with the Las Vegas Sphere.
KEY BACKGROUND
Dozens of brands have announced their plans to feature some of the country's biggest stars in Super Bowl ads, including Tom Brady, Willie Nelson, Christopher Walken, Patrick Stewart, Arnold Schwarzenegger and Anthony Hopkins. Ads this year are said to cost up to a record-breakingly expensive $7 million for a 30-second slot, not including any money the brand pays to produce the ad or hire talent. The Super Bowl has annually reached an audience of more than 100 million people since the mid 2000s, and last year 115.1 million viewers tuned in for the game. It is by far the most watched television program annually.
BIG NUMBER
$10 million. That's how much Ben Affleck was paid to appear in a 30-second ad for Dunkin' that appeared in last year's superbowl, according to CNN. The same price was reportedly paid to Larry David for his 2022 Super Bowl ad for now-defunct crypto exchange FTX.
TANGENT
A Verizon ad wouldn't be the first Super Bowl commercial to star Beyoncé. Back in 2003, she was featured alongside Britney Spears, Pink and Enrique Iglesias in a Super Bowl ad for Pepsi, and her other credits include commercials for L'Oreal, H&M, Nintendo, American Express and Ivy Park, her athleisure clothing line. In 2012, Beyoncé reportedly signed a $50 million deal with Pepsi that included promotions around Super Bowl XLVII, which included her first halftime show performance, and she was in a big game ad for the soda brand the next year. In 2021, she and husband Jay-Z were in a Tiffany & Co. commercial.
WHAT TO WATCH FOR
The Super Bowl will air at 6:30 p.m. EST this Sunday on CBS and Nickelodeon. It will be available to stream on Paramount+.
