Trump Defeats Haley In Michigan Republican Primary—On Track To Clinch Nomination Next Month

Donald Trump Holds Primary Night Event In Columbia, SC

Former President Donald Trump speaks in Columbia, South Carolina.

Trump led former South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley 65.6%-30.2% with about 9% of statewide votes counted as of about 9:10 p.m. ET, shortly after the Associated Press called the race for him.

Prior to Tuesday’s primary, Trump had won 110 total delegates after beating Haley, his only remaining competitor in the race, in the first four contests in Iowa, New Hampshire, South Carolina and Nevada.

Michigan awards 55 GOP delegates: 16 proportionally to candidates who win at least 12.5% of the statewide vote, while the 39 others are awarded proportionally to candidates in each of the 13 congressional districts or to the candidate who wins the majority of the votes in a congressional district.

Trump’s campaign estimates he could exceed the 1,215-delegate threshold needed to clinch the Republican nomination as soon as March 12, when Georgia, Hawaii, Mississippi and Washington hold their primaries.

TANGENT

President Joe Biden won the Democratic primary in Michigan on Tuesday, earning 78.8% of votes with around 13% counted statewide as of 9:10 p.m. Some 15.8% of Democratic voters selected “uncommitted” on their ballots, many of whom were likely protest votes over Biden’s handling of the Israel-Hamas war.

KEY BACKGROUND

Biden and Trump have ramped up their attacks against each other, looking beyond the primaries, as the two are all-but-certain to face off in the November general election, with polls showing a neck-and-neck contest. Immigration has become a key issue in the 2024 election cycle as border crossings have reached a record high during Biden’s tenure and Congress has failed to come to an agreement on new border security measures. Biden, facing concerns about his own age (81) exacerbated by repeated rhetorical and physical stumbles, has also sought to turn the tables on Trump, 77, by highlighting the former president’s recent string of gaffes. Haley, meanwhile, has vowed to stay in the race at least until Super Tuesday on March 5, arguing that voters deserve an alternative to Trump and Biden, who she refers to as “grumpy old men.”
