Tanya Chutkan — Judge Overseeing Trump Case — Victim Of ‘Swatting’ Attempt

Chutkan has garnered national attention since she began overseeing the Trump election interference case this summer.

TOPLINE
The federal judge overseeing former President Donald Trump’s election interference case was the target of an attempted “swatting” attack Sunday night, multiple news outlets reported Monday, as the method of making false reports of emergencies becomes more common.

KEY FACTS
Metropolitan Police and fire responded to false reports of a shooting at the home of federal judge Tanya Chutkan around 10 p.m. Sunday night, news outlets reported Monday.

Chutkan—who has been overseeing the election interference case against the former president in U.S. District Court since August—was home when authorities arrived on the scene and said she “was not injured and that there was no one in her home,” an unnamed law enforcement official told NBC News.

WHAT WE DON’T KNOW
It’s unclear who made the original 911 call or where it came from.

KEY BACKGROUND
“Swatting”—the act of anonymously making a false report of an emergency or a crime in order to bring officials to a particular location—has become increasingly common in recent weeks. Swatting is usually done as a form of harassment or as a prank. The FBI said last month it was investigating threats made against the Colorado Supreme Court after they said Trump was ineligible to appear on Colorado’s primary ballot later this year (the U.S. Supreme Court will make the ultimate decision on whether Trump will appear on the primary ballot in the near future). Sen. Rick Scott (R-Fla.), Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) and Rep. Brandon Williams (R-N.Y.) have all reported similar incidents of “swatting” in recent weeks.

TANGENT
This is not the first time Chutkan has faced threats. In August, Abigail Jo Shry, a Texas woman, was arrested and charged with transmitting a threat to injure a person via interstate commerce. Shry allegedly left Chutkan a voicemail saying the judge would be killed if Trump does not get elected president in 2024.
