President Trump’s overall disapproval rating has climbed to 62 percent, according to a new poll.
The Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research shows 36 percent of Americans approve of the way Trump is doing his job. The approval ratings are consistent with the president’s previous numbers, never dipping below 32 percent or rising above 42 percent.
According to the AP, Trump is the only president whose approval ratings have never been above 50 percent, though several – Harry Truman, Richard Nixon, Jimmy Carter, George H.W. Bush and George W. Bush – posted worse ratings at points of their presidencies.
On particular issues, Trump posted his highest rating – 46 percent – for his handling of the economy. Other scores were lower: immigration (38 percent); health care (37 percent); foreign policy (36 percent); and gun policy (36 percent). His disapproval ratings for those same topics were: economy (51 percent); immigration and healthcare (60 percent each); and foreign policy and gun policy (61 percent each.)
The president continues to score well among his own party, with nearly 8 in 10 Republicans approve of Trump’s overall job performance compared to 20 percent who disapprove. A whopping 94 percent of Democrats disapprove of the president, as do about two-thirds of independents.
The AP-NORC poll of 1,058 adults was conducted Aug. 15-19. The margin of error is 4.2 percentage points.
