FBI Investigates Attempted Assassination of Trump: Former President Safe After Golf Course Incident
The FBI announced on Sunday that it is investigating what appears to be an attempted assassination of former President Donald Trump.
Earlier that day, the Trump campaign confirmed that the former president is “safe following gunshots in his vicinity.” Trump campaign spokesperson Steven Cheung added, “President Trump is safe following gunshots in his vicinity. No further details at this time.”
A suspect has been detained in connection with the incident at Trump International Golf Club, according to law enforcement sources. Reports indicate that the Secret Service engaged the suspect, who was believed to be armed and targeting Trump. A long gun has been recovered from the scene.
This incident comes just two months after another assassination attempt against Trump at a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, which had already drawn scrutiny of the Secret Service’s security measures.
In a fundraising email sent out Sunday afternoon, Trump reassured his supporters, writing, “There were gunshots in my vicinity, but before rumors start spiraling out of control, I wanted you to hear this first: I AM SAFE AND WELL!”
At the time of the incident, Trump was between holes five and six on the golf course, accompanied by donor Steve Witkoff. The suspect was reportedly several holes ahead of Trump when the confrontation occurred.
The Secret Service stated on X (formerly Twitter) that it is collaborating with the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office to investigate the protective incident, which happened shortly before 2 p.m. The White House has confirmed that President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris have been briefed on the situation and are relieved to know Trump is safe. Harris commented on X, “I have been briefed on reports of gunshots fired near former President Trump and his property in Florida, and I am glad he is safe. Violence has no place in America.”
Both Biden and Harris, currently in Washington, D.C., will continue to be updated by their team. Attorney General Merrick Garland has also been briefed, according to Department of Justice spokesperson Dena Iverson.
South Carolina Senator Lindsey Graham, a close ally of Trump, reported that the former president is in “good spirits” and more determined than ever. Graham wrote on X, “He is one of the strongest people I’ve ever known. He’s in good spirits and he is more resolved than ever to save our country.”
