Trump Campaign Lambastes Biden's Celebration of 'Transgender Day of Visibility' on Easter Sunday—Highlighting March 31 Tradition

Image
The Trump campaign blasted President Joe Biden for proclaiming March 31, which this year falls on Easter Sunday, as Transgender Day of Visibility, even though the day has been recognized on March 31 every year for more than a decade.  Trump campaign spokesperson Karoline Leavitt issued a statement calling it “appalling and insulting” that Biden “formally proclaimed Easter Sunday as ‘Trans Day of Visibility.’” The White House issued a declaration Friday proclaiming March 31 as “Transgender Day of Visibility,” calling on Americans to “join us in lifting up the lives and voices of transgender people throughout our Nation and to work toward eliminating violence and discrimination based on gender identity.” The proclamation drew widespread criticism from conservatives on social media—House Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., called it “outrageous and abhorrent” that Biden recognized “Transgender Day” on Easter Sunday, while firebrand Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, R-Ga., tweeted, “There is no lengt

Are Gas Prices Headed Skyward? Analysts Suggest a Temporary Surge

Image
The national average price for a gallon of regular gas eclipsed $3.50 earlier this month, the highest point since October amid rising oil prices and geopolitical conflict, the pace of the rise has since eased and analysts suggest prices may drop in the longer term.  American drivers are paying about $3.53 for a gallon of gas on average as of Saturday, according to data from both GasBuddy and AAA. Patrick De Haan, head petroleum analyst at GasBuddy, said he expects average gas prices to reach a peak in April and May, noting he “fully expects” thousands of gas stations in the U.S. to offer gas at $2.99 per gallon by the last quarter of 2024. De Haan also said gas prices “aren’t rising faster than usual,” as the average price for a gallon of gas has risen near the average recorded over the past several years, according to GasBuddy data. A recent AAA analysis noted that an increase in prices to start the year has eased, though “the break may be temporary, as gas pump prices will likely re

Senator Mike Braun Faces Penalty for Misreporting $11 Million Campaign Loans, FEC Reveals

Image
The Federal Elections Commission fined Sen. Mike Braun, R-Ind., $159,000 after failing to correctly disclose millions of dollars in loans for his 2018 Senate campaign, according to an agency document published this week.  The fine was unanimously approved by the FEC’s six commissioners, after the agency found Braun’s campaign incorrectly disclosed financial information for 29 transactions totaling more than $11.5 million, the FEC said. Braun’s campaign told the agency the mistakes were “technical in nature” and caused by its former treasurer, whom the campaign claimed had access to documents to “properly report” the loans. Braun did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Braun is one of six GOP candidates in Indiana’s upcoming gubernatorial election. Ellen Weintraub, the FEC’s vice chair, criticized the commissioners’ ruling for failing to address more than $734,000 in excessive contributions to Braun’s campaign that were discovered in an earlier FEC audit. Weintraub said s

OpenAI Unveils Cutting-Edge AI Voice Generator—Access Limited for Now

Image
OpenAI revealed its Voice Engine tool Friday, an AI generator that can use text and an audio sample to create “natural-sounding speech that closely resembles the original speaker,” but the company said it will not be publicly available yet due to the “potential for synthetic voice misuse.”  OpenAI said in a blog post that it first created the tool in 2022 and has been testing it with a small group of partners who have identified potential uses for it such as giving reading assistance, translating content, supporting non-verbal people and helping people with speech conditions recover their voices. For Voice Engine to “create emotive and realistic voices”—which can also be done in languages other than the user’s own—it just needs a 15-second audio sample and text sample. The company said people who have had access to the tool for testing have agreed to usage policies that ban the use of impersonating a person or organization without consent and gaining “explicit and informed consent” fr

Why Tesla's Stock Struggles Are Capturing Attention in 2024

Image
Left out of the stock market’s balmy start to 2024 was Tesla, the electric vehicle giant led by eccentric billionaire Elon Musk, as the automaker whose balance sheet once made it a Wall Street favorite contends with mounting pressure.  Tesla’s stock is down 29% year-to-date, making it the worst-performing company included on the S&P 500, returning a full three percentage points less than the next biggest loser, embattled commercial airplane maker Boeing, according to FactSet data. Tesla’s slump, which coincided with the S&P’s best first quarter in five years as all three major stock indexes set new all-time records, came as investors and analysts alike readjusted growth expectations for the company. The firm’s January earnings report revealed a whopping 40% year-over-year decline in quarterly profits and below-expected 3% revenue growth, revealing brutal growing pains for a company long admired for its ability to scale its business while maintaining robust profit margins. Ex-Colorado Mayor Chosen by GOP Committee as Ken Buck's Successor

Image
A committee of Colorado Republicans nominated Greg Lopez Thursday to fill the vacant seat of Rep. Ken Buck, R-Colo., multiple outlets reported, a surprise move for a role that was expected to be filled by one of the nearly dozen Republicans vying for the seat. Lopez served as mayor for two terms in Parker, Colo., during the 1990s, according to the Colorado Sun, and previously lost gubernatorial bids in 2018 and 2022. The former mayor also has a history of encounters with law enforcement, the Colorado Sun reported, including a 1993 domestic violence incident with his wife, Lisa—the couple reportedly pleaded guilty to a harassment charge in 1994—and Lopez was also accused of driving under the influence, according to the Denver Post. Eleven Republicans are on the ballot for the Congressional district—three of which currently serve as representatives for other districts: Rep. Lauren Boebert, R-Colo., Rep. Richard Holtorf, R-Colo., and Rep. Michael Lynch, R-Colo., who stepped down from his

‘Oppenheimer’ Premieres In Japan—8 Months After Global Release, ‘Barbenheimer’ Criticism

Image
“Oppenheimer” premiered in Japanese movie theaters on Friday, eight months after its global debut and amid criticism about how the Academy Award-winning film portrayed the effects of the atomic bombs that hit the country nearly 80 years ago.  Bitters End, a Tokyo-based independent film distributor, released the film in Japan with initial screenings beginning just before 9 a.m. local time, according to Japanese media. Some movie theaters posted signs warning the film featured images of nuclear tests, which could evoke damage caused by the bombs, Reuters reported. Takashi Hiraoka, the former mayor of Hiroshima, said the “horror of nuclear weapons was not sufficiently depicted,” suggesting “Oppenheimer” was “made in a way to validate the conclusion that the atomic bomb was used to save the lives of Americans.” $957 million. That’s how much “Oppenheimer” earned at the global box office by the time it won the Academy Award for Best Picture earlier this month, according to BoxOfficeMojo. Th

Billionaire Elon Musk said Friday his artificial intelligence company xAI’s chatbot Grok-1.5 “should be available” to the public next week, after the chatbot became open-source and officially entered the rapidly growing AI chatbot market.    Musk confirmed the news in a Friday post on X, after xAI’s account announced it in a blog post. The latest model of the chatbot will be available to “early testers and existing Grok users,” according to the blog post, and has “improved reasoning capabilities and a context length of 128,000 tokens”—which is the amount of text the chatbot can process and store information on. Musk also confirmed Grok 2 is in development, saying: “Grok 2 should exceed current AI on all metrics. In training now.” We estimate Musk to be worth about $195.3 billion. South African Transport Minister Sindisiwe Chikunga confirmed 45 people died in the crash in Limpopo, a region in northeast South Africa, the  South African Broadcasting Corporation  reported. The passengers onboard the bus, which lost control as it fell off a bridge in South Africa’s Mmamatlakala mountains, were traveling for an Easter conference held by the Zion Christian Church. Only one of the passengers, an eight-year-old girl, survived the crash, and was airlifted to a local hospital with severe injuries. Amazon Launches Sign-Up App For Its Palm Payment Service—Here’s Why Some Privacy Experts Have Concerns About The Feature

Amazon One rolled out in September 2020. Photographer: Bridget Bennett/Bloomberg   Amazon announced Thursday the launch of an app allowing users to easily sign up for Amazon One, its palm recognition service that has reached increasingly more retail locations in recent years and raised concerns from digital privacy experts. The new app lets users sign up for Amazon One through their phones instead of having to visit a physical location to do so, requiring them to take photos of their palms for enrollment. Amazon One uses palms and their underlying vein structure to create a palm signature, which is created with the help of  generative AI  and verified by Amazon One scanners for things like retail purchases, age verification, entry and more. Amazon One scanners, once limited to Amazon stores, can now also be found in hundreds of Whole Foods locations, some Panera Bread stores and third-party locations including  stadiums , airports and fitness centers. Trump Again Targets Judge’s Daughter In New York Criminal Case

Image
The gag order was issued Tuesday Former President Donald Trump  lashed out  against Manhattan Judge Juan Merchan and his daughter, Loren Merchan, once again Thursday—an attack that comes just weeks ahead of Trump’s first criminal trial and two days after the judge issued a limited gag order in the case. Trump said in a Truth Social post Merchan was “totally compromised” and should be removed from the hush money case immediately. Trump furthered his scrutiny of Merchan’s daughter—identifying her by name and saying she is a “Rabid Trump Hater, who has admitted to having conversations with her father about me,” though the former president didn’t provide evidence to back up his claim. Trump’s statements against Merchan and his family are not barred by the gag order issued earlier this week. The former president claimed Merchan’s daughter works for President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris, extending a criticism he made on Truth Social earlier this week noting she worked as an

Elon Musk Hints Dogecoin Payment For Teslas ‘At Some Point’—Meme Currency Soars

Image
Tesla CEO Elon Musk said the company may accept dogecoin as payment for cars "at some point." Meme cryptocurrency dogecoin surged on Thursday after Elon Musk hyped the Shiba-Inu-inspired token and hinted it could be accepted as payment for Tesla cars in the future, the latest in a long line of endorsements from the billionaire as the crypto market rallies and  bitcoin soars  to an all time high. Dogecoin  has climbed nearly 8% over the last 24 hours, reaching roughly $0.18, and with a market capitalization of around $26.5 billion, the popular—and notoriously volatile—meme token is one of the top ten most valuable cryptocurrencies. The spike, largely an outlier among the tepid or stagnant gains among other leading cryptocurrencies over the past day, comes after Musk hyped up the meme-based cryptocurrency to a crowd at a Tesla factory in Germany. When asked whether the electric vehicle maker would accept dogecoin as an official form of payment for its cars, Musk said he think

The Titanic II replica ship imagined by billionaire Clive Palmer.  BLUE STAR LINE A mining billionaire and former member of the Australian parliament has again relaunched his plan to build a replica of the Titanic that is “far, far superior than the original” and will carry passengers around the world in "style and luxury." Clive Palmer, the world's 732nd-richest person as of Thursday, this week held a press conference in Sydney to say his dream of building a ship called the Titanic II is alive and well, and he plans to secure a shipyard and start building the vessel early next year. Palmer, who has already started and stopped the Titanic II project twice before, said the plan is more real than ever before because "I've got more money now," the Guardian  reported . Plans for the ship from Palmer's company Blue Star Line would essentially recreate the exact ship that sank in 1912, including the famous grand staircase, a smoking room, theater, casino and
