Martina Navratilova, Tennis Icon, Declares Cancer-Free Status In A Powerful Post

Martina Navratilova has announced that she is free from cancer. The tennis legend shared the news on Monday through a tweet, following a series of tests conducted at the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York City.

In her tweet, Navratilova expressed her gratitude to the doctors, nurses, and medical professionals who had supported her throughout the process, referring to them as "proton and radiation magicians." She also included an expletive remark directed towards cancer, reflecting her relief.

Navratilova, who is 66 years old, disclosed that she had been diagnosed with both throat cancer and breast cancer in January. Treatment for these conditions began in the same month. In 2010, she had previously received treatment for a noninvasive form of breast cancer through a lumpectomy.

In November, Navratilova noticed an enlarged lymph node in her neck, which led to a biopsy and the subsequent discovery of early-stage throat cancer. Despite her health challenges, she resumed her work as a TV commentator for the Tennis Channel during the Miami Open in March.

In May, while accepting the "Racchetta d'Oro" (Golden Racket) award at the Italian Open, Navratilova discussed her battle with cancer. She stated that she had endured a challenging year but was now doing well.

Back in January, during the WTA Finals in Texas, the tennis icon received a positive prognosis after medical professionals discovered an enlarged lymph node in her neck. The biopsy revealed early-stage throat cancer. Additionally, during her throat tests, doctors identified unrelated early-stage breast cancer.

Navratilova made a comeback as a TV analyst for the Tennis Channel in March. During an interview with Piers Morgan on TalkTV, she mentioned that doctors had informed her that she was, to their knowledge, cancer-free and that she could proceed with additional radiation treatment. Throughout her career, she has won an impressive total of 59 Grand Slam titles, including 31 in women's doubles and 10 in mixed doubles.

Her most recent Grand Slam victory was in mixed doubles with Bob Bryan at the 2006 US Open, which occurred just a month before her 50th birthday. Originally retiring in 1994 with a record-breaking 167 singles titles and 331 weeks at No.1 in the WTA rankings, Navratilova later returned to the tour in 2000 to compete in doubles matches and occasionally played singles as well.
