It Can Be Terrifying:' Mel B Reflects On 'Debilitating' Childhood Stutter While Revealing She Still Has 'Daunting' Moments With Her Speech

Mel B has opened up about living with a stutter, which she described as being 'terrifying' and 'debilitating'.

The Spice Girl, 48 briefly touched on her childhood speech impediment during her 2019 Piers Morgan's Life Stories interview, explaining how it developed following her parents' separation.

Mel told how she would slap her knee to help get difficult words out, which she claimed her late father Martin would do when he was struggling too.

But she's now shed a light on stammering as an adult, revealing the communication impairment returns during moments of excitement.

In an exclusive interview with MailOnline, the singer said, 'Having a stutter can be really debilitating. It can really knock your confidence and I had mine for quite a while and I do get it every now and again when I get quite excited.

'I've just got lots to say, but it can be really daunting for any kind of communication.

'I was young when I had my stutter, but I can only remember it as the fact it was just really frustrating.

'You're thinking one thing in your head, but what's actually coming out... it's just a discombobulation of the start of words or the end of one word. It can be really, really terrifying.'

Since stutterers' diaphragms are habituated to contract in response to fear, for reasons unknown, many organisations such as The McGuire Programme teach costal breathing techniques to counteract speech blocks.

When it comes to the Wannabe hitmaker, she swears by morning meditation sessions and nasal breathing to prepare herself for the day.

She said, 'The first thing that I do in the morning when I open my eyes is so important and it just sets me up for the day.

'I listen to a lot of yoga nidra and I've got this one meditation that lasts exactly 21 minutes. So even though my alarm goes off at ridiculous time like at 6:45, I know for those 21 minutes I'm just going to do my nose breathing, relax my body and prepare myself for the day.

'And just even if it's four minutes, five minutes, it's really quite surprising how that just helps you mentally and physically conquer whatever happens to you during the day.'

Mel also discussed a new photoshoot with the lingerie brand Pour Moi, where she models a series of colourful undergarments alongside her mum Andrea and daughter Phoenix.

She gushed, 'The good thing about this brand is that it's about the fit and the comfort.

'So it was nice to kind of come together, celebrate each other's bodies, we've all got different body shapes, we all chose different swimsuits and underwear to wear that actually made us all feel comfortable and it was just like a celebration.

'I donated a lot of the proceeds to Women's Aid too,' the charity's patron concludes, 'because that was really, really important to me.'
