Inside Ukraine's Longest Battle In The City Of Bakhmut
“Ukraine has drawn a line in the dirt, and that line is Bakhmut.”
Tens of thousands have died fighting for the city in the eastern Donbas region.
Fighting began more than seven months ago, and it is the longest battle of the war with Russia so far.
On a chalk hillside to the south, the BBC’s Quentin Sommerville visited one anti-tank group called 3Storm, from the 3rd Separate Assault Brigade.
The group’s trenches are filled with antiquated kit including a rusting field telephone and First World War Maxim machine gun.
Troops say Russian casualties far outweigh theirs, but the enemy is deploying new techniques to try to seize the city and surrounding countryside.
