Tragic Loss: Kenya Mourns Military Chief Francis Ogolla

Kenya's military suffered a devastating blow as Francis Ogolla, its esteemed Chief, met his untimely demise in a helicopter crash within the western reaches of the country, as announced by President William Ruto in a solemn televised address.

The unfortunate incident occurred shortly after take-off on Thursday afternoon, claiming the lives of General Ogolla and nine other military personnel, with only two fortunate survivors, President Ruto disclosed.

In a somber tone, President Ruto conveyed his deep sorrow, stating, "I am deeply saddened to announce the passing of General Francis Omondi Ogolla, the Chief of the Kenya Defence Forces."

A team of investigators has been swiftly dispatched to the crash site in Elgeyo Marakwet County to unravel the circumstances surrounding the tragic accident, President Ruto confirmed.

General Ogolla's mission on that fateful Thursday was to embark on a journey from Nairobi to visit troops in the North Rift region and oversee ongoing school renovations, as per the president's account.

In response to the calamity, President Ruto promptly convened an urgent meeting of the National Security Council in Nairobi, as relayed by presidential spokesperson Hussein Mohamed.

Expressing his profound grief, President Ruto lamented, "As the Commander in Chief of the Kenya Defence Forces, it is a tragic moment for the Kenya Defence Forces fraternity and a most unfortunate day for the nation at large."

"We bid farewell to one of our most valiant generals, alongside gallant officers, servicemen, and women," he added, mourning the collective loss.

Kenya will observe three days of mourning, commencing on Friday, as declared by President Ruto.

According to the state broadcaster Kenya Broadcasting Corporation (KBC), General Ogolla's demise marks the first instance of a Kenyan military chief perishing in active service. General Ogolla's illustrious journey began in 1984 when he joined the Kenya Defence Forces, rising through the ranks to become a 2nd Lieutenant in 1985 before being assigned to the Kenya Air Force, as documented by the Ministry of Defence website.
