Meghan Markle chose a trip to Africa with Prince Harry to address her racial heritage for the first time since becoming a royal, as she visited a charity Monday and passionately expressed her sisterhood with African women.
“Just on one personal note, may I just say that while I am here with my husband as a member of The Royal Family, I want you to know that for me I am here with you as a mother, as a wife, as a woman, as a woman of color and as your sister,” the Dutchess of Sussex, 38, told a crowd of women and girls who gathered in support of the organization Justice Desk in Nyanga, South Africa.
The former “Suits” star has previously addressed her heritage in writing but has never publicly spoken about it since becoming a British royal.
“My dad is Caucasian and my mom is African American. I’m half black and half white,” she wrote in an essay for Elle in 2015.
Markle, who wore an $85 dress, and Prince Harry were seen dancing and laughing with the locals.
The couple later visited the District 6 museum, which honors families who were forcibly removed during the apartheid era.
This was their first stop on their 10-day Africa tour with baby Archie.
